More people are being diagnosed with diabetes every day. Look at the people that you socialize with on a regular basis. Diabetes most likely is affecting at least on of them. If not, then there is probably at least one person who knows or is related to someone who has diabetes. While it is very common everywhere, it is incredibly so in the western world. Diabetes is broken down int two types, Type 1 and Type 2. If you are insulin dependent, you have Type 1. Type 1 diabetes can occur at any time. Type 2 is usually called adult onset diabetes because it occurs in adulthood and these diabetics are not insulin dependent. Here are a few of the major causes of these different types of the disease. Age is one of the determining factors of whether you will develop diabetes. Obviously, there is nothing you can do control this factor. Since there is no fountain of youth, getting older cannot be changed. You can control how healthy you are, at any age. Most people with type 1 diabetes will develop it earlier in life. If you are older and leading a healthy lifestyle it is possible that you could stave off Type 2 diabetes completely.
How much do you exercise or move around? Scientists now know that a sedentary lifestyle can contribute heavily to whether or not a person develops diabetes. What does that mean? It means physical activity is healthy and recommended! Thirty minutes a dayof excercise is advised. The excercise does not need to be intense. You don’t have to run a marathon to stave off diabetes, even just around the block can be enough. This is one of the diabetes causes that is the easiest to control. What in the world are you still doing sitting there? Get up off your butt and walk! Ethnicity is another deciding factor in whether or not you will develop type 1 diabetes. Those with ancestors from Northern Europe are more inclined to develop this condition. Those of Finnish or Sardinian descent are the most likely to develop diabetes. From there, African Americans and Hispanic Americans are affected. Those of Asian descent have shown incredibly low risk of developing diabetes. This factor is not one that can be controlled. This is a factor that you will have to live with because obviously it can not be changed. Most cases of diabetes can be avoided. Type 1 diabetes isn’t as easy to fend off because it depends on genetics, ethnicity and other uncontrollable factors. Type 2 diabetes is determined by factors that we have more control over. Talk to your doctor if you think you might be at risk of contracting either type of this disorder. By talking to them, they will be better able to help you avoid this disease altogether.
