Thirty five years ago the Longaberger Company was begun but the current company continues to be based in those early roots and traditions. The company started with this mission statement; “To Stimulate a Better Quality of Life,” and the company holds true to that goal. Today, the company provides a variety of handcrafted products, including baskets, wrought iron accessories and pottery, and offers a chance at self-employment to about 45,000 Home Consultants.
History of the Company The Longaberger family moved to Dresden, Ohio in 1896, a lively village at the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains. The common container of choice for carrying pottery ware at that time was the basket. J.W. Longaberger started to work at the factory, becoming a full-time apprentice and learning the art that would become his trademark. During this period, he met Bonnie Jean Gist, whom he married in 1927. The factory’s doors were closed because of the Great Depression forcing J.W. to take work at the local paper mill but he continued to make baskets in his free time. In 1936, he and Bonnie bought the old basket factory, which they renamed The Ohio Ware Basket Company. Their family grew large, in due course including a total of 12 children. The 5th child was Dave, who was disadvantaged both by his family’s low economic status and the fact that he was afflicted with a bad stutter and epilepsy. In spite of this, Dave was ambitious, and as a young boy, he was continually taking odd jobs for money. Dave went on to take a job driving a bread truck and served in the Army for two years. After Dave and his wife had their daughter, Tami, they purchased the Dresden Dairy Bar and an old grocery store. They remodeled the building and reopened it as Dresden IGA Foodliner, and the two businesses helped support his growing family. The trend toward popularity of baskets in the 1970s caused Dave to ask his father, J.W. to make baskets and he would sell them in his store. The baskets were such a hit that they sold out immediately. J.W. passed away just at the time the baskets were becoming popular again. To honor his father, Dave opened J.W. Handwoven Baskets in 1976. He expanded the factory to include the old woolen mill where his mother had worked when he was a child. He continued to expand the basket business, attempting to sell them in locations other than his stores. In 1978, the direct sales organization of Longaberger baskets was born when Dave recognized the best showcase for the baskets was home consultants. Joining the company in 1984, Dave’s daughter Tami proved to be an excellent leader and 10 years later she was appointed president. She helped diversify the company into other home lifestyle areas. Now, the company is the leading maker of handcrafted baskets and other home and lifestyle products.
