Lack of Experience on the NFL’s Head Coaching

I don’t know if everybody noticed NFL’s predilection towards hiring young head coaches. The only ones with experience right now in new jobs are Herm Edwards, who transferred from the Jets to Kansas City, and Dick Jauron of the Bills. I’m getting the hint that NFL owners are not crazy about the high price coaching they have been handing out over the past few years. You don’t find inexperienced head coaches are able to demand top dollar. I understand the reaction of the Buffalo Bills fans, when they would have preferred Mike Sherman as the new coach, mainly because he was a consistent winner with the Packers. Something must have happened with Sherman and Green Bay’s board of directors, since he kept being stripped of power over his last three years with the team. Ron Wolf, the Packers’ retired general manager, hired Sherman in Green Bay and was pulling for him to get another head coaching job, but he also knows Jauron well and his remarks about him are interesting. The best things happening under Jauron’s reign so far is the way he is putting together his team and staff Steve Fairchild, the new offensive coordinator, established himself under Mike Martz in St. Louis the past three years. Bill Kollar, the new defensive line coach, has been considered one of the NFL’s best in his job for years. It’s strange how often things come full circle for coaches. The quarterbacks coach on Williams’ first staff was Steve Kragthorpe, later became head coach at the University of Tulsa. Bringing college coaches with fresh ideas to a pro staff is often a good idea, but Williams over did it. More than half his staff was composed of coaches who never worked in the pros before. Now that Williams is knocking them dead with his $2.5 million-plus salary with the Redskins, the conventional wisdom is that he’ll get another chance as an NFL head coach relatively soon, probably as the successor to Joe Gibbs in Washington.
