For Gardening Beginners, Hostas May Prove Exemplary

‘Liberty’, ‘Blue Angel’, ‘Sum and Substance’, ‘Sagae’, ‘June’, ‘Regal Splendor’; no, these are not the names of race horses in the next Kentucky derby, but rather, these are the names of other beautiful creatures- the perennial plant known as hostas. The hosta is known for its exquisite foliage and there are many species to choose from- including a very small percentage that are fragrant. Indeed, hostas have a great deal to offer, especially to gardening beginners.

Gardening may not be rocket science, but in order to have plants and flowers that survive and thrive, a great deal of care, diligence, and good old fashioned hard work will be needed. This is especially true if the plants selected include those which are particularly fragile and otherwise difficult to grow under many environments conditions. As this may be the case, newcomers to gardening or those who simply can’t dedicate the necessary time and effort may become discouraged if failures continue. For those who are in such a situation, there are perennial plants whose varieties are beautiful and do not require the kind of care needed as in other perennial plants. Hostas have proven to be delightful for gardening enthusiasts the world over as well as those newcomers who are just beginning to experience the excitement and fulfillment offered by serious gardening.

Although hostas require a generous amount of moisture, little care is generally needed once the hosta is planted. Since hostas are shade plants, they will not require a great amount of sunlight as in other plant species. Although some soil preparation will be required for best hosta growth, those who have grown hostas will find that the amount of time tending to a hosta will be limited while the time spent simply admiring the beautiful leaves, flowers, and in some cases fragrance of the hosta flowers will be much!

Whether you are a gardening newcomer or have a great deal of experiencing with gardening, you will likely be impressed by the beauty provided by hosta. No matter whether you prefer ‘June’, ‘Sum and Substance’, ‘Sagae’, or perhaps another of the myriad of hosta varieties, you’ll surely not be disappointed!
