Remember the George Allen quote adopted by every high school football coach? -œFootball is like the game of life.- When I was a young athlete, that old cliché really irritated me. Sports were supposed to be fun. And the game of life -¦ well, that was something else. Then I grew up, had kids of my own, and became a recreation league coach of football and several other sports. I have not used Mr. Allen’s cliché myself, but I have learned the real wisdom behind it. When youth sports are coached well, they do help kids to learn how to live a good life.

Regardless of the sport or the age of the child, there are three fundamental lessons a coach should teach, summarized as Self, Group and Fun. · Self: I get better at something when I work at it. · Group: I am responsible to others and they are responsible to me. · Fun: I can enjoy life through physical activity and community. Now don’t get me wrong. I don’t lecture players about becoming -œfully realized personalities- or -œmore responsible members of the world community.- We never mention such weighty subjects at practice. What I do is to try to keep these higher purposes in mind as I structure practices. Kids will learn about themselves and their relationship to the team, and then apply these lessons to other relationships and to their daily lives. VICTORY AND DEFEAT It isn’t necessary to win games for kids to learn these lessons, but it does help. A victory is a tangible reward for their efforts and proves that it has been worthwhile. Still, of the two philosophies, I favor the traditional, -œIt’s not whether you win or lose, but how you play the game,- over Lombardi’s -œWinning isn’t everything, it’s the only thing.- Of course when I play or coach, I really want to win. Fortunately, I have found over the years that if coaches and players follow certain guidelines, they do tend to win games. But even in defeat, the coach and players tend to absorb the loss into a larger experiential context. Experiencing defeat is part of life – for most of us, a regular part. It’s a valuable lesson if players learn that effort and group solidarity enhance the enjoyment of playing well– even for a losing cause. GUIDELINES Practice is often the best time to teach the three fundamental objectives of Self, Group and Fun. In order to balance the three, use the following guidelines: Work on the fundamental skills required for the individual player to play well. Once at a sports banquet I attended, then Indiana University basketball coach, Bob Knight, told us that the most important ingredient in developing a basketball player’s ability are the -œfundamentals.- Whether you like or dislike Bob Knight, you cannot argue with the evidence of his success in bringing out the best in players by drilling them on the fundamentals of basketball. This is especially helpful for younger players who have just been introduced to a sport. Spend time individually with each player working on their weak points and encouraging any potential talents. This element of practice may be blended with fundamental skill work. On the one hand, every child has areas of play that need improvement. On the other, most kids like some aspect of the game best, and practice should be a means for kids to enjoy their favorite part of the sport. Engage players in group activities that require teamwork to accomplish common goals. Social psychologists discovered years ago that disunited individuals and diverse groups may be brought together when circumstances create -œsuper-ordinate goals.- In English, that means sharing a common goal brings people together. Any drills that require two or more players to cooperate to achieve something, such as running a relay or set plays, create super-ordinate goals for the players. A simple illustration is to take four runners and require that they pass a baton. Runners have to work together to make a relay work. Achieving common goals through collective action is the essence of teamwork. Teach players that each of them has a responsibility to the team to try to play well and that the team has a responsibility to recognize each player’s contribution. Christopher Lasch points out in his book, The Culture of Narcissism, that focusing on self-aggrandizement usually leads to unhappiness rather than glory. Considering the attention advertisers and the media pay to individual sports stars, it’s an uphill battle to convince kids they’ll be most happy within the context of a team, i.e., being a -œteam player.- But kids need to learn that for effective teamwork, each player must play hard no matter what the role. That may mean being the player who is set up to score, or it may mean donning heavy and self-effacing gear of goalie or catcher. A team needs each position to be played for the team At a sports banquet I attended in high school, the legendary coach John Wooden put it something like this: -œThere may be no -˜I’ in team, but the team is a team when all the -œme’s- become -œwe.- Play the game. Kids join a team to play. Practicing sports help kids grow in many ways, but sports should always include an element of fun. And what’s most fun about sports is playing. Encourage kids to practice on their own and continue to play sports in the future. Two images Americans love are: an inner-city kid on a cracked concrete court working his jump shot over and over through a netless rim; or a farm boy whacking a baseball against the door of a desultory barn until the cover is worn off the ball and the paint off the door. We appreciate these images because they stir in us the picture of love of sport. But developing love of a sport takes more than just going to practice. Even those kids who will never be standouts will feel better about themselves if they come back next season with an improved backhand or a better curve ball. They’ll also be more appreciated by the team. And most importantly, a kid who learns that sports can be enjoyed outside of organized athletics has a lifetime of fun ahead of him. A TYPICAL PRACTICE Consider a typical practice I conducted with the last soccer team I coached for six-year olds. First, we do a little running and stretching. Next, we form a circle and work on proper passing technique. At the same time, I quiz the kids on the names of their teammates. Learning everyone’s name becomes fun, because it is associated with play. Next is drilling on individual skills. Proper kicking and passing is repetitively practiced. I try to remind each player of the fundamentals, such as -œkeep your eye on the ball as you kick- and -œstrike the ball at the bottom of your big toe.- While giving these instructions, I run the kids through exercises requiring them to aim their kicks at targets or to use their left foot for kicking. I try to keep drills interesting, but focused on fundamentals. Skills drills are work, but the fun comes with getting better. I can see the delight on a kid’s face as she kicks the ball farther than she did the last practice. I praise her – not just for kicking well, but for working hard and improving. For the kids, then, the payoff of their hard work is evident in that moment of success. The teamwork phase of practice is comprised of drills, set plays or relays requiring cooperation among the players. When they work on plays or run relays, the kids directly experience the necessity of cooperation to achieve a common goal. Think of the movie -œHoosiers.- The coach, played by Gene Hackman, forbid any player from taking a shot at the basket until the ball had been passed at least four times. Eventually the players realized that teamwork made scoring easier for each player. If you have to pass the ball four times before anyone can even try to score, eventually you will come to associate passing (cooperation) with scoring. On the other hand, the kids joined the team to play the sport, not just to drill and learn to cooperate. So, we always have a practice game after group drills. (For individual sports such as swimming or track, this can be more difficult. The kids can’t go through an entire meet at the end of practice. But they can play related games such as water polo or shot-put relays. Any activity that incorporates the sport into a fun event involving the whole team will work.) Finally, at the end of practice, I talk to the players. What are their concerns? What are my concerns as coach? I try to give practical advice about improvements the players and the team can make. And I always encourage them to play the sport outside of practice. Finally, we do our -œhuddle up- ritual: We gather in the middle of the field, put our hands together, and yell, -œGoooooo Lazers!- FAITH AND VALUES Most of my coaching has been done in a secular context. Even the YMCA and church leagues in which I have coached have rules prohibiting evangelism by the coaches. But the principles of Christian community and ethics are obvious in the coaching guidelines I use. As a coach, I am concerned about the development of each member of the team, just like a minister is concerned about the spiritual development of his parishioners. The team, when it works as a team, is like a church – as the Apostle Paul describes it – with all parts working together. And playing a sport is like living a faithful life. It is challenging, fun, develops the self, and promotes communal cooperation. Without being explicitly evangelistic, coaching offers a wonderful and rewarding opportunity to teach and show by example the Christian faith. Your faith will show through in the way you conduct yourself with your players, their parents, other coaches, and referees. Abusive or tyrannical behavior by a coach, who is supposedly a Christian, does not shine a light toward Christ and reveals the coach as a hypocrite. I would encourage every Christian woman and man who has enjoyed athletics in their own lives to take up the challenge of coaching. Secure the ball: Learning to use pass fakes and learning to use your body to shield passes. If you don’t learn how to do these things, you will turn the ball over and will be sitting at the end of the bench. Always keep your body between a defender and the ball when making a pass, step around the defense to make a pass, or use a pass fake in the opposite direction of where you actually intend to pass to get the defense out of your way.The easy pass: 99% of the passes you make in your career aren’t going to make any highlight reels. In fact, it is often the pass THAT LEADS to a pass that results in an easy basket. A strong passer can see that if they pass to the guy at the top of the key, he will be able to feed it into the post at a better angle (but if you, yourself, passed it directly to the post…the D might pick it off). Here is an easy rule of thumb…if you aren’t sure if the ball can fit through a gap, or you aren’t sure if they can catch the ball, DO NOT THROW IT.Note – we call these passes where you aren’t sure about the result “50-50 passes”.Throw short passes: Long passes are more easily defended. The longer the ball is in the air, the more time the defense has to react and make a play on it. Try to minimize the amount of long cross-court passes thrown, and be careful on long skip passes. If you need to, there is nothing wrong with taking one or two dribbles toward your teammate before passing. I’m writing this article for the person who knows nothing about baseball, the person who doesn’t know the difference between the Triple Crown and an unassisted Triple Play. I’m not going to write about the history of baseball so if that’s what you want look somewhere else, I’m going to tell you the necessary information so you can sit down on a Saturday afternoon and watch a baseball game. Even if you do know a lot I’m hoping you can learn a little. 

Introduction

Baseball is a bat and ball sport played by 2 teams of 9 players a side. The goal of baseball is to score runs by hitting a ball that is thrown by the pitcher and run around the bases. The bases are arranged on the corners of a 90 foot square called the diamond. Players on the batting team take turns hitting while the fielding team tries to get them out. Once a player on the batting team gets on base he can choose to stop in the hope that a teammate will drive him in. The teams switch between batting and fielding when the fielding team gets 3 outs. Once each team gets 3 outs that is an inning, there are 9 innings in a MLB game. The team with the most runs at the end of the game wins.

Major League Baseball

In the United States and Canada the professional baseball league is called Major League Baseball (MLB.) MLB is divided into 2 leagues, the National League (NL) and the American League (AL) which in turn, are divided into 3 divisions: East, Central and West. To determine the champion of baseball MLB uses an 8 team playoff. The teams that make it are all 6 division winners plus a Wild Card. The wild card is the team with the best record that isn’t a division winner. The first round is best of 5 while the second round and the World Series are best of 7. Each major league team has a farm system of minor league teams at various levels. These teams allow players to gain improve while playing against opponents with a similar skill level.

Equipment and Field

There are 4 basic tools in baseball: the bat, the ball, the mitt and the field

The bat is an offensive tool used by the batter that is either wood or aluminum depending on the league. It is a long stick maybe 35 inches long, 2 inches wide and 35 ounces heavy.

The mitt otherwise known as a glove is worn by the fielding team to assist in catching the ball. Mitts take various shapes and sizes to accommodate the needs of individual positions.

A baseball is about the size of a fist and white with red lacing (Although other colors could be used.)

Baseball is played on a field in which the dimensions vary depending on age. However every field has bases which are arranged on a diamond that offensive payers try to run around counterclockwise. The part of the field closest to the bases is the infield and the part farther away is the outfield.

Game Play

Baseball is played in a series of 9 innings, each of which are divided in to 2 halves, top and bottom. In each half-inning, the offensive team attempts to score runs until three of its players are put out. After the third out, the teams switch roles for the other half of the inning. The home team plays defense first, and so plays defense in the top of every inning and offense in the bottom of every inning. At the beginning of each half-inning, the nine defensive players arrange themselves on the field. One defensive player is called the pitcher and stands at the center of the diamond on a designated spot, called the mound or the rubber. Another defensive player is called the catcher and stands on the other side of home plate from the pitcher. Typically four more players are arranged along the lines between first, second, and third bases, and the other three are in the outfield.

Runs are scored as follows: starting at home plate, each offensive player attempts to earn the right to run to the next base of the diamond, then to touch the base at that corner, continuing on to each following base in order, and finally returning to home, whereupon a run is scored. Often an offensive player will achieve a base but be forced to stop there; on future plays the player may continue to advance, or else be put out.

A play begins with an offensive player called a batter standing at home plate, holding a bat. The batter then waits for the pitcher to throw a pitch (the ball) toward home plate, and attempts to hit the ball with the bat. If the batter hits the ball into play, the batter must drop the bat and begin running toward first base. There are other ways to earn the right to run the bases, such as walks or being hit by a pitched ball. The catcher catches pitches that the batter does not hit (either by choice or simple failure to make contact) and returns them to the pitcher.

If the batter fails to hit a well-pitched ball (one within the strike zone) or if he hits it so that it goes outside of the field of play it is called a strike. However, if the ball is hit over the outfield and exits the field there, it is instead (one type of) a Homerun: the batter and all other offensive players on bases may complete a tour of the bases and score a run.

When a batter begins running, he or she is then referred to as a. Runners attempt to reach a base, where they are safe and may remain there. The runner defensive players attempt to prevent this by putting the runners out using the ball; runners put out must leave the field (returning to the bench or Dugout the location where all the other inactive players and managers observe the game).

There are many ways that the team on defense can get an offensive player out. For the sake of simplicity, only the five most common ways are listed here:

1. The Strikeout: occurs when the batter acquires three strikes before hitting the ball (within the field); the batter never becomes a runner.

2. The Groundout: when the batter hits the ball but a defensive player retrieves it after it has touched the ground and throws it to another defensive player standing on first base before the runner arrives there.

3. The Forceout: occurs when a runner is required to run to advance bases ahead of a teammate’s hit but fails to reach it before a defensive player reaches the base with the ball. The “ground out” is actually a special case of “force out.”

4. The Flyout: if a defensive player catches a hit ball before it touches the ground, the batter (now a runner) is out (regardless of his location).

5. The Tagout: while between bases, a runner is out if a defensive player touches him with a held ball.

Statistics play an important role in summarizing baseball performance and evaluating players in the sport. Since the flow of baseball has natural breaks to it, the game lends itself to easy record keeping and statistics. The old cliche in baseball is that a walk is as good as a hit, so naturally when judging a player you should also take into consideration if he gets on base with walks also. Runs is the amount of times a player scores. Normally players with a lot of runs get on base a lot or hit a lot of home runs. To put it in comparison the top 35 players in MLB had between 115 and 90 runs. Its no coincidence that many of those players are also the top offensive fantasy scorers. Runs can be a good thing to on your team because you cant score a run without getting on base so your fulfilling three statistical categories in one.The main judgment of power is generally home runs. Home runs is simply the amount of times you put the ball over the fence. When a player hits a home run they get a boost in there batting average, obs, slugging, ops, a run and a rbi. Power has come down in the past few years as the game has come clean from steroids. Last year league leader Jose Bautista had 54 to lead the league by over 10 home runs. Today a premier power hitter will have around 38 home runs. Many people get in the mid 20′s. The top 50 numbers in the league in 2011 had between 54 and 23 home runs. When a run is driven in he gets a RBI. Over 100 RBI’s means a great year from a player. Over 75 normally means good production, especially with home run numbers being down. A player who gets on base a lot and hits a lot of home runs will have a high OPS. OPS is on base plus slugging percentage. In my opinion it is one of the better stats to rate a player overall. Calculated by adding on-base percentage and a batters slugging percentage. To compare league average was about.720 in 2010. Anything in the.800′s is good and.900′s and over is exceptional. The main negative batting stat used in fantasy baseball is strikeouts. A lot of players who are good home run hitters also get strikeouts. Strikeouts can be the difference between winning and losing a fantasy league. The main stats used to score pitching in fantasy leagues is IP, Wins, Strikeouts, WHIP, Saves, ERA and holds. IP is simply the amount of innings a pitcher pitched. Starters try to get at least six innings every time they head to the mound. When they pitch more innings chances are they also will get more strikeouts since strikeouts are accumulated over time. Because of that guys who last longer in games tend to do better because if they were doing bad they wouldn’t have pitched that long. That being said, normally pitchers who have more innings also have lower ERA’s and strikeouts.Two ratios that pitchers are judged on is ERA and WHIP. ERA is earned runs average allowed over 9 innings. For instance a pitcher who gives up 2 runs in 4 innings will have a 4.50 ERA. WHIP is walks and hits per inning pitched. Like ERA, the lower the WHIP the better. It is a good ratio to see how many base runners a pitcher allows a inning. For relievers they get some love with the saves and holds category. A save is typically accumulated by closers who pitch the last inning in a win. To get a save a pitcher must close out the game from a starter with a lead that is three runs or less. The good closers can also help pitch in on ERA and strikeouts as strikeouts are a key stat for closers since they dont want batters to make any contact. Holds are accumulated by set up men who hold on to a lead when they come into the game to relieve a starter.
